SAVANNAH, Ga.  (WJCL)  — Savannah Christian senior Mark Fraser is a big guy making some big noise on the diamond and in the classroom.

“You always get told that if you work hard it will pay off,” says Fraser.  “I’m really glad all my hard work is starting to pay off.”

The Planet Fitness Academic Athlete of the week plays first base and pitches for the Raiders.  He has already signed with Cornell University and this spring he’s batting over .500 with 40 RBI’s.  While those numbers are impressive, how about the number “one.”  Mark is currently ranked first in his senior class.  He’s looking forward to the challenge ahead in the classroom and on the field when he heads to the Ivy League in the fall.

“I’m told that’s it’s quite an academic challenge,” says Fraser.  “Everybody there has been helpful and I’m confident that I will be able to balance both the academics and athletics there at Cornell.”

The Academic Athlete of the Week award is just the latest in a growing list of accomplishments for the baseball standout.  He plans to pursue a degree in engineering while at Cornell.

“Since 8th grade I’ve been really focused on the school work,” adds Fraser.  “My parents really drove home the point that academics give you the true opportunities in life.”
