DeRenne Avenue 4th grader, Erin Mills, competed in the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) US National Championship on February 12, 2011. The event was hosted in Atlanta, Georgia and included an estimated 1,000 competitors aged five to adults in their fifties. Erin won 2nd Place (Silver) in the “NO-GI” event, and won 1st Place (Gold) in the GI event.
Grappling is a combination of Judo, Jiu-Jitsu and submission wrestling. Erin’s background is primarily Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. This was Erin’s first major competition.
Erin trains at Champions Training Center (CTC), a family gym/martial arts school for people of all ages. CTC’s focus is Boxing, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and Wrestling.
CTC has an amazing kids program where goal setting, discipline, physical fitness and follow through are paramount. These qualities were demonstrated this past weekend at the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) tournament. Of the kids from CTC, Erin and her teammate, Thai Corbbrey, both took gold medals in the Gi division. Erin took silver in the no-gi division and Thai placed Bronze. The kids and adult team took home a total of 9 gold medals, 7 silver, and 6 bronze.
Erin’s coach, Muhsin Corbbrey, began his martial arts career at the age of eight in boxing and Tae Kon Do, and knows first hand the positive impact martial arts has on children. Muhsin is a judo and jiu jitsu black belt and is ranked under Hall of Fame grappler Lloyd Irvin. Coach Muhsin is also a professional Boxer, Kickboxer, and Mixed Martial Artist.
