What you have to know:

  • Three definitions of acids and bases
  • Chemical behavior of acids and bases
  • What is a salt and how does one form
  • The behavior of water as an amphoteric substance
  • The ionization constant of water and its relation to pH
  • What pH is an indication of
  • The relation of pH to concentration for strong acids and bases (how to calculate)
  • Titration stoichiometry for strong acids and bases
  • Identify acid/base anhydrides and acidic and basic salts
  • What is acid rain, how it forms in the atmostshpere

Assignments and Activities

    Readings

    Chapter 9

  • Section 2 - Page 250 - 251 - Naming acids. Study the flowchart on page 251.
  • Read Pages 910 - 911 in the Math Handbook of the Text. Use Table 4 on page 910 to "check and confirm" you know how to use the log key on your calculator.

    Chapter 19

    • Section 1 - Read and compare with class notes.
    • Section 2 - Read and study definitions for strong and weak acids and bases. Re-read Page 607 and study Figure 19-10.
    • Section 3 - Read and study example problems 19-1,19-2,19-3 and 19-4
