Each chapter of your text book includes an insert titled "Careers Using Chemistry". The insert describes careers that utilize chemistry on a daily basis. Individuals in these careers require academic and professional chemistry education and training in order to be employed.
- Review the list provided and pick one of the careers.
- Find the insert in the chapter listed and read the description.
- Review the chapter (even if it is one we did not cover in this course) and determine how the career may relate to the chapter content material. How would someone in this profesison use the information describe in the chapter?
- Find someone in this profession to interview.
- Email the career selection and the individual's name you will interview to Mrs. Barnwell, dbarnwell@savcps.com, for approval before you conduct your interview. Be sure you include your name in the email!
- Interviews must be completed by you, the student. During the interview:
- Have the individual provide a general overview of their job function and responsibilities
- How does the individual utilize chemistry in the daily completion of their job?
- Find out how much chemistry training the individual completed
- What additional training and education was required for this profession?
- Is this a field of study you may have interest in yourself? If so, why or why not?
- Provide a minimum two-page written essay summarizing the information listed above and fully covering material and answering questions from steps 3 and 6.
- Submit your essay by providing a hard copy at the beginning of class on the due date listed above.
- Credit:
Extra credit will be awarded 0-40 points. Well crafted, thorough essays that illustrate much study and gains in understanding will score more points. These points will be added to your total points at the end of the quarter. For example, at the end of the quarter you have 775 points out of a possible 1000 for a 78% average. The extra credit score was 25, so you now have 800/1000 or a 80% average.
- I have added several additional careers to the list to give you more flexibility. For the added careers or a career not on the list, you must still describe how a chapter content is applicable to this career. If you would like to complete an interview with an individual in a profession not on the list, come talk to me in person.
