Approval of Websites must be obtained - Friday - October 3, 2008 - No later than 3:30 pm!!!!

Step 1 – choose one topic we have studied in the current semester. It may be broad – such as ‘ionic bonding’, or more specific such as ‘ how to name ionic compounds".

Step 2 – find three to five web sites about the topic.

One place to start looking is listed below but there are many, many sites available.

http://www.chemistry.org/portal/a/c/s/1/acsdisplay.html?DOC=recommended%5Cchemhelp.html

Step 3 – email the topic and full URL’s for the web sites to Mrs. Barnwell dbarnwell@savcps.com for approval. Be sure you include your name in the email!

Step 4 – When you get a reply, you may find
a. all are approved, so go to Step 5
b. some are not approved, find new web sites to replace those and repeat Step 2.
c. Topic is not approved, go back to Step 1 and start over.

Step 5 – read, think about, study the graphics, work any problems, and answer any question at each website.

Step 6 – write a comparative review of the sites chosen. This review will discuss the topic covered, how well it was presented, your assessment of the site’s value to a high school student, what was done well or poorly at the site to help you learn chemistry. URL for each must be included in review.
a. How readable is the site? How easy is it to understand the concepts? How suitable is the site for a high school student?
b. What useful information did you learn which you didn't know before? What topics covered in class were reinforced or built upon?
c. Other factors that you believe are relevant, such as other topics covered by the site, online quizzes or interactive features.

Step 7 – submit your essay by providing a typed hardcopy of the comparative review to Mrs. Barnwell at the beginning of class the day the assignment is due. Late assignments will not be accepted.

Step 8 – Credit
Extra credit will be awarded 0-40 points. Well crafted, thorough essays that illustrate much study and gains in understanding will score more points. These points will be added to your total points at the end of the quarter. For example, at the end of the quarter you have 775 points out of a possible 1000 for a 78% average. The extra credit score was 25, so you now have 800/1000 or a 80% average.
