Study Guide for Bench Tests

Compound ID Lab

This lab will count as a test grade and you need to prepare for it as you would a test. Schedule time over the holidays to complete the 10 questions listed below. You should have the assignment below completed by January 6, 2008 when you return to school.

Your procedure will be checked for completion before you are allowed to begin work in the lab. If you have not completed the testing by end of class Thursday, January 8, you will need to plan to come in after school Wednesday, or before school and lunch Thursday, of that week.

The formal lab report is due Thursday, January 15, 2009.

1. What is a bench test?

2. Why will you do the test on known materials first?

3. What are the identifying colors for the metal cations from flames tests? List each here.

4. List the tests you will be able to use by the ion the test identifies.

5. Why is this a qualitative lab? Explain.

6. Explain how you can use ferro- and ferri- cyanide to determine the oxidation number of iron in another compound.

7. What does the thiocyanate ion ID?

8. Begin writing a procedure for this lab. First go though the list on pages 21 - 22 and determine which test(s) you will use for each unknown A-J. Then group the same tests together and explain each you will use ONCE.

9. You may need to do more than one test to confirm the identity of a given unknown. Go back through your list and identify a second test you can use. If there is no second test, state this in your procedure.

10. Read the conclusion questions. You will have to do some research and reading to answer these questions. Discuss these questions with your chemistry classmates, your family and your friends in other classes and write down your ideas now for answering.
